I am old enough to remember quite well why Hayakawa came out of nowhere to be elected US senator from California.
He was appointed acting president of San Francisco State U. during an episode of rather long and rather violent student protest, even by '60's stanards.
During one such protest, Hayakawa jumped on a protestor's sound truck, ripped the wires from the speakers on the roof top and yelled "Go to Hell!!" at the top of his lungs at the crowd of student protestors.
All this was captured on tv newsreel film and broadcast nationwide a day later.
It was because of his image of a reactionary jerk that made him a hero of the right wing and got him the Republican nomination.
