I thought it might be Tippon (Tippin?) because he seemed to have an inside track. First he was an investigating officer, then an investigator for the DA's office, then he was hired by a private detective agency contracted to work for Petrocelli--I think.
Now,however, that you note (in your reply to Pat) that the person would be known to members of the press, I'm thinking that the person in question could be David Gascom or Gascon or something like that.
He was the LAPD's pressofficer or spokesperson.
