Could he have been called the E name as a kid and hated it. Maybe Edmon, Elija. Usually if you hate your middle name you just stick with the initial. Not having a middle name it is a pain in the rear. YOu have to keep explaining that you don't have one. So when I got married I just added the intial of my maiden name and made my life easier.
