Jasper, Though I cannot recall the exact wording from the interview, the "off the clock" work was much more sinister than what you are suggesting.
It has been written that the Mezzaluna was a drug/porn/gigalo/hooker/money laundering outfit. And that they were under investigation.
I am NOT suggesting that DeBello had any prior knowledge of the murders. What I AM suggesting is that he was very vunerable to police intimidation. And he might have had his "own reasons" for keeping certain things that went on in and around the Mezzaluna quiet.
Anything in or around the way that they paid the employees or had them setup for outside activities would have been something he would have tried to avoid like the plague.
Also in the interview with the young boy who took Nigg's place at the Mezz, it was clear that he was spooked even in the interview with DeBello but took the job. Only after a few days, did he confide in his mother about what was said and how uncomfortable he was there.
