I agree that Katie tried to minimize the investigation, but somehow I got the idea that she did buy into the theory a little more than she let on.
Katie is an educated idiot with very little human experience, always protected by her media peers. I'm sure this whole thing has been a rude awakening to her, particularly since she has two small daughters to worry about. I did get the impression she would like to see the perpetrator hung by the gonads from the highest yardarm prior to chopping him in half with a guillotine.
