John gave me an idea and I went to the LA Times Archieves and on March 17, 2001 there is an article discussing whether or not to split the 714 area code in Orange County. The headlines indicate that it won't be.
Since that was a 2001 article, I opened up my new 2001 telephone book and discovered that there is NO 949 area code listed for California or anywhere else for that matter.
The headlines of the stories indicate the 949 number to be used but no story says it has been done.
Yet, if you go to any of the area code sites and type in 949, you will get the cities of Orange County California.--at least Dana Point and others.
Type in 714 and you will get Hunington Beach.
Or look up the Brown's or anybody else's number in Dana Point and it will give the 949 area code.
So evidently the 714 area code was in place in 1994 or so it would seem.
