In California message units have been around for ever in big cities. You didn't even have to dial one in some areas. A person might make a call and not even know it was long distance message units. I am unsure of the LA area other than CA was broken up in mid 1980's. The Interlata, Intralata started and the fight for who may and may not handle local long distance began. Now no one wants long distance. Even the latest and greatest wireless is going for time used and not length of call. If a call is itemized, whomever it billed, it was counted as a long distance call. Whether it says flat rate or not. These are the different plans. Now it has been eleven years, well ten and one half, since I worked there but as much that has changed, much has not.
