Snitches are an essential part of how a street cop does his job.
If you are a cop involved in drug trafficking, you have to cultivate and exploit small-time drug uses and pushers connected to the "big fish" you want. You need people who will sell out their best friends or closest family members for a promise and a threat. You'd have to have somebody exactly like Faye Resnick, Denise Brown and Ron Shipp. We know that Fuhrman was connected to Shipp and Shipp was connected to O.J. and Nicole. That's just for starters.
We know that, as a narcotics officer, you would have some contact somewhere with other levels of government involved in fighting (or aiding) the drug trade just to keep from shooting each other by accident. You have to have access to at least some of the official surveillance information and other intelligence data or be closely associated with someone who does. You may be asked or ordered to do some of that information gathering yourself. That could explain why Fuhrman would feel safe in boasting about his affair with Nicole if he really had an affair with her (whomever used him for that purpose would do anything to protect his butt). But a good snitch like Faye or Denise would be just as good. Maybe better. --Jasper
