I read the Lait character the way you do, and I agree with your assessment of reporters writing with an agenda. It drives me up a wall -- even when I agree with them. Their job is to come as close to the truth of what happened on a particular occasion as they can, not to convert others to their point of view.
My brother was back in town last night (he lives in Georga now) and the subject of "cowboy" cops came up. I had to tell him how my attitude toward cops in general has undergone a big change.
I used to think that there were a few bad cops. Now I think that's "bass acwards." There are a few good cops. i was still steaming over the jerk in uniform who gave me the bojus traffic ticket. His name is Ryan. What bothered me about Ryan was his swaggering contimept for the law and the system of AUTOMATIC protection in the departmen and in the courts for anything he chose to do. There was only one person in his chain of command who was willing to listen to my story (my son had installed some glass in his car and asked him to speak to me). For some reason he seemd surprised that I was able to descrbe the kind of things Ryan was prone to do just by the way he appraoched the car and the way he talked to me. If you had seen this guy and heard him lying, you would know that it didn't take much to see where he was coming from.
A short time later a cop just like Ryon shot deff mute to death afther the man "refused" to comply with his order to drop a rake. I heard only one report about the killer cop's KGB-like attitude, but it sounded so much like Ryian that I thought it was him until I heard the name. Different guy. Same KIND of guy. There are others, and the department protects them.
My brother told me about a cowboy who really creeped him out. This joker reminded me a lot of Fuhrman. He was very bright and very anal. He knew the law inside and out with respect to when a police officer was permitted to use deadly force -- and he used it -- when he didn't have to. --Jasper
