I have not discounted the possiblity that Fuhrman may have been a hired hitman for drug dealers, the FBI or a large, organized hate group. He could very well have been all three. I would not put it past him. However, I have no strong evidence for that he was, and I'm pretty sure that the primary motive for the killings on Bundy was self-promotion. That's right, a grisly, elaboriate, publicity stunt.
You can't make big money the way Fuhrman has been doing since the publication of his first best-seller without being a central figure in a blockbuster of a news strory. The trouble is, you have to be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time doing the right things to become that central figure -- or you have to be bold and ruthless enough to create the story around yourself.
The O.J. case had "manufactured media event" written all over it with dramatc sound bites, ironic circumstances, racial stereotypes, Shakspearean metaphors and movie cliches at every turn. It had bloody shoeprints "running to the back" of the condo (actually, they were walking) that were supposed to belong to a former football running back. It had bloody gloves like the ones we saw O.J. holding a microphone with as a football color comentator. It had a cap like the one we saw him wearing in a popular movie. It had a "bleeding killer" and a famous suspect with a cut he couldn't explain. It had victims and wounds on the victims that could have told the story of a drug hit or a rage killing. It had a hidden history of spouse abuse, dramatc stories of spouse-abuse and a popular celebrity charged with murder who seemed to have a Jekyll and Hyde personalitay. It had two dramatic 911 calls that were attributed to this man's murdered ex-wife (there is zero evidence that she made the call in '89 and plenty of evidence that she didn't).
All of that said, the best "photo-op" in the case was the one with Mark Fuhrman pointing to the bloody glove with all of that other incriminating evidence bunched around it in an artificially tight radius. Things could not have worked out better for Fuhrman if he had planned it that way. The odds that he did not plan it that way are about as great as throwing a dozen coins in the air for a million-dollar pay-off, calling all of them heads, and having them land that way ten times in a row. One then has to ask whether our not he had the time, the physical resourses and the connections to have manipulated those results on each occasion. If the answer is "yes" the odds are better than even that he did. In the case of Mark Fuhrman's run of "lucky accidents," leading to him write a spouse-abuse report on O.J. in '89, to tell friends about O.J.'s spouse abuse from Nicole herself in '92, to being the first homicide detective on the case, to being photographed with the Bundy glove, to his bleeding killer theory, to his involvement in the investigation after he was off the case, to his observation of the Bronco "parked at an odd [two-degree] angle," to his partner's observation of the blood trail leading "into" the Rockingham gate and his discovey of the second glove.... the answer is, yes.
O.J. could not have committed the murders so he must have been framed. But there was more to lose than to gain for drug dealers tied to Fred Goldman, Al Cowlings, F. Lee Bailey or the Columbians for any of them to have been behind the killing or the framing. The last thing any of these people want is media attention. Whoever killed Ron and Nicole wanted all the media attention he could get.
Faye Resnick was involved in many of the ways you write about here. The bear on the keyring was pure BS. No one but Faye ever claimed to have seen it. O.J. didn't. Cora Fischman didn't and neither did Nicole's maid. All of that is in Iago. But in reseaching the case, it slowly dawned on me how Fuhrman's pattern of killing many birds with one stone in his testimony and his writing was also typical of the evidence left on Bundy by the killer and the ideas planted at Rockingham by Fuhrman and Roberts. If O.J. was framed with the shoes, the cap, the blood drops and the gloves, it could only have been done by the killer who planned way ahead to use them and for the right moment to strike. There is no way he could have done it, though, without the help of someone who could supply the shoes and gloves (I think that was Wasz before he went to jail in '91--but it could have been Faye, Shipp, Denise or Nicole). There had to have been someone who could keep an eye on O.J. at Rockingham (Ron Shipp) and someone who could have stolen Juditha's glasses and passed on to the killer what kind of shoes O.J. wore to the recital. Convincing the prosecution that O.J. was guilty was easy. The hard part was convincing O.J.'s defenders not to pursue evidence that pointed to the real killer, whoever he was. That means creating false evidence trails. You will find plenty of them. Some go to Ron Shipp, some to Kardashian, some to Kato and some to drug dealers of one kind or another.
Fuhrman was a master at creating false evidence trails. But he was also heavily involved in illegal drugs -- as a narcotcs cop. In his book Murder in Brentwood, he slipped up and said something about cultivating "snitches" for a murder investigation (the killing of Shawn Stewart). As a narctics cop he would have had to do likewise. I hope you will keep this in mind when you consider the two things William Wasz, Ron Shipp, Denise Brown, Faye Resnick and some of Nicole's other other buddies had in common...a dependence on drugs and a good reason to fear a cop who knew how to apply the squeeze. --Jasper
