Actually, it is not all that uncommon for a civil suit to be filed against someone who had been found not guilty in a criminal trial for the action they are then sued for in civil court.
Before OJ, the most famous example was Bernard Goetz of New York, the so-called "subway shooter" who, while being found not guilty of criminal charges, was then sued in a cvil suit, which he lost. Since Goetz was pssessed no more than average wealth, this civil action amounted to no more than a vindictive act of revenge to provide a 'sop' to the Black community.
