Jean— I wondered what these characters would do next. ………….. This is not lame mischief. It has the potential to do one of the things the MASSIVE spamming on our boards came within a hare’s breath of doing – tangling us up in so much garbage that the site itself became synonymous with garbage. It’s the cyberspace equivalent of pulling dump trucks labeled Smartfellows Press up to the lawns of everyone on a hit list and dumping full loads of trash. ………….. By now, ALMOST everyone knows that the nuisance factor of spam far outweighs the theoretical benefits to anyone who advertises this way. Even if they do make money by getting one sale in 10,000 “free” ads, they lose sales in the number of people they piss off. So, what you get in the end are advertisers who fall roughly into two categories: 1) Those who don’t understand how spam hurts them. 2) Those who are not adversely affected by the number of people they offend because they are working from mailing lists that they believe target their products or services to real potential buyers. ………….. There should be another name for “spammers” who target websites with purely malicious goals in mind. These criminals are interested only in destroying or crippling the sites that offend them. …………….It would be good to know who are on the e-mail lists where the bogus Smartfellows spam is going. I’m guessing that it includes a whole bunch of people that the bad guys don’t what to come here. –Jasper
