The Carl Rowan article above was published by the Chicago Sun-Times on Dec 2, 1992, the same day Paul Conrad's "Out of the Ashes" cartoon was published in the Los Angeles Times.  Rowan was the featured syndicated columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times just as Conrad was the featured cartoonist for the L.A. Times. The Conrad "blackball" cartoon probably fits as well as it does with Rowan's "Throw the bum out" article on the Dec 4 Detroit Free Press op-ed page for two reasons: 1) Conrad had time to read the article and compose a fitting cartoon for the L.A. Times on the 3rd or 4th.  2) Editors of newspapers outside of Chicago who printed Rowan and Conrad written and illustrated commentaries regularly, held the article in anticipation of getting a good cartoon to go with it and printed them together when they got it.
