If the killer opened the front gate, made some noise to lure the Akita out of the house and toward the gate, it's possible the killer was able to lure the Akita out to the street before locking the gate.
This would lead to more barking from the Akita, perhaps even a "plaintive wail". As Rovaan suggests, a barking Akita would indicate trouble to Ron if he was making his way to Nicole's front gate.
But since the back gate is actually closer to where he parked his car, is it possible that Ron entered through the back?
