I'm glad you made that post for another reason… I knew that Fuhrman owned a 1970 Ford pickup truck and still had it when he wrote his book in '96. It was hard to miss because he used it in his second interview with Dianne Sawyer and he write about it in Murder in Brentwood. If the idea was to hid the Scout, it didn't work. Is absences made it that much more conspicuous.
Why he mentioned the old pickup truck in the first place makes sense only when you see him doing it to paint an image of himself as a simple guy who doesn't care about money or status symbols. The Ford would have been ten years older than the Scout but the Scout was still pretty old. If you want to come off as someone who doesn't care about status symbols the Scout was the vehicle to do it with. The new SUV that Charlie saw him with recently sort of undercuts the "anti-status symbol status symbol idea unless it belonged to someone else and one of the Fuhrmans was just borrowing it.
In any event, the requirements for keeping that old Ford in good condition tells you about Fuhrman's interest in maintaining old vehicles in general that he liked and his wherewithal to do it. He had to spend some time in the junkyards.
The '70 Ford pickup truck did not have a blue oval in the grill but junkyards are full of them. The only thing the Scout needs to be misidentified as a Bronco from the front is a blue Ford oval in the grill.
Simple, cheap and effective - but not absolutely necessary.
How many of us would have sworn in 1994 that we saw a white Bronco when we really saw a light green Scout if enough people told us that we must have seen the Bronco? The answer is already in the psychology books: Most of us. --Jasper
