My inability to find the Paul Conrad swastika cartoon that Mark Fuhrman said was on his desk could mean that my memory of seeing it in the Detroit Free Press was imaginary — a composite, perhaps, of Bill Day's Phoenix and swastika drawings. However, many of Conrad's cartoons were published in the Free Press during the year or so of East and West German reunification news stories and commentaries. A political cartoon is a graphic commentary. As of February 27, 1913, I have searched all but a few days worth of newspaper editorial and op-ed pages for the Conrad swastika cartoon in question. Below are roughly half of his cartoons that I found in the Free Press between December, 1989 and October, 1990.

I found the cartoons above on my way to looking in 1989 and '90 Detroit Free Press archives for Conrad's "German reunification" cartoon. If I'd known the Dec 2, 1992 date that the one I was looking for was printed in the Los Angeles Times but not in the Free Press like so many of his other foreign affairs cartoons, I would not have found any of them.      --Jasper
